Sir Alex Ferguson Honorary Degree
On 12 September 2013, Sir Alex Ferguson visited the University of Glasgow to help launch the next phase of the Beatson Pebble Appeal and tour the newly opened Beatson Translational Cancer Research Centre at Gilmorehill.

During his visit, Sir Alex acknowledged a generous £1 million donation from The Howat Foundation, led by Malcolm Howat, whose continued support has been instrumental in advancing the University’s pioneering cancer research.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements in sport and his ongoing charitable support, the University awarded Sir Alex Ferguson an honorary degree during the visit. His presence and endorsement of the Appeal attracted international media attention and inspired continued public support for the vital work of the Beatson Institute.

“It is an honour to visit this new research facility that will help in the fight against cancer which was funded by generous donations from many people. I am delighted The Howat Foundation has kicked-off the next stage of fundraising with such a generous gift.
For too long Glasgow has been the cancer capital of Europe, and like many people over the years I have seen family and friends afflicted by the disease. I hope that investment in research facilities like this will help us beat cancer and improve the health of the people of Glasgow, Scotland and beyond, so I encourage people to continue supporting the Beatson Pebble Appeal."
